The materials and structure of packaging

The evaluation systems for the materials and structure of packaging materials

  • This program aims to encourage the mandatory producers to enhance the materials and structures of their packaging voluntarily through various purchase encourage programs and differentiation of the mandatory contribution amounts in consideration of the recyclability of packaging materials.
  • From the designing phase of packaging materials, recyclability is considered so that the packaging materials can be produced easily, while those that are difficult to recycle are phased out.

The applicable items for the ratings

  • The packaging materials that are manufactured or imported by a manufacturer with a duty of recycling packaging materials according to Item 1 under Article 16 of the Resources Recycling Act or the products that are sold using such materials.

Grade period for the mandatory testing

  • Considering the number of companies, products, and packaging materials to be tested, a nine-month grace period is given since the enactment of the law (Dec. 24, 2019 through Sep. 24, 2020.)
  • After the grace period (which ends on Sep. 24, 2020), a party that sells a product of which the packaging material has not been reviewed for the material and structure by the Environmental Corporation shall be fined.

5. General foamed synthesis resins
6. Polystyrene paper
7. PET bottles
8. Packaging containers made of a single synthetic resin material, trays
9. Containers or trays made of multiple materials;
films or sheets made of a single or multiple materials

Key test processes and equipment for packaging materials

  • Assessment of the aluminum jointing structures, whiteness test, dried weight measurement, analysis of the synthetic resin material, metallic material assessment, paper judgment, metal mix-in assessment, color analysis, specific gravity analysis, 3D surface area calculation, assessment of whether the material can be separated from the main body, and measurement of the thickness

The evaluation systems for the materials and structure of packaging materials

  • Prepare a list of products based on the shipping records or import records of the packaging materials. Organize the records by the types of the packaging machines. Then, request KTC to conduct a test of the materials for their materials, structure, and easiness in recycling, handing of the documents above along with the test request.
