KTC-KAC Sign Agreement for Future Growth in Industry Standardization and Testing/Certification of Technologies

Korea Testing Certification institute (KTC), has officially announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) on the 22nd, signaling a joint commitment to driving environmentally sustainable and secure airport initiatives.

Within the scope of this agreement, the two organizations pledge to collaboratively work on the development and implementation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure at airports. This initiative includes the standardization and validation of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (eVTOL) for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) services, as well as providing standardization support for smart LED lighting to facilitate the creation of smart airports.

KAC has been actively advancing the establishment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure for airside ground operations vehicles, encompassing runways, aprons, and control towers, as part of its environmental policy since August. Capitalizing on KTC's expertise in electric vehicle charging stations and batteries, the institute plans to present a roadmap for the swift deployment of charging infrastructure for ground operation vehicles transitioning from diesel to electric. This roadmap will address communication compatibility, durability, and information security within airport premises.

Since April of the previous year, the two institutions have collaborated on the development of landing guidance devices for eVTOL Vertiports, crucial stops for UAM. Urban Air Mobility involves short-distance flight systems within a city, utilizing low-altitude airspace for urban air transport. Through this agreement, KTC will provide comprehensive services, including development, validation, testing, and certification, for landing guidance devices.

Moreover, KTC aims to formulate efficient solutions for airport lighting management to enhance energy savings and service quality. The institute intends to contribute to the standardization of LED lighting performance based on an assessment of the current state of LED lighting within airport facilities.

In steering the digital and green transformation of industries, KTC has identified 13 strategic areas, with a particular focus on the aviation industry, and operates corresponding roadmaps. Notably, the institute entered into a collaboration with the BK21 FOUR Education Research Group at the Korea Aerospace University in March to nurture talent and conduct joint research. Additionally, KTC is actively involved in the Defense Acquisition Program Administration's (DAPA) technology project for the Korean Blue Force Tracker communication satellite large antenna, with a total project budget of 46 billion won.

President Sungil Ahn of KTC expressed, "Emerging industries in the aviation sector, such as runway-independent eVTOL and the conversion of ground operation vehicles to eco-friendly models, are gaining momentum." He emphasized, "Drawing on KTC's capabilities in testing, standardization, and demonstration across the 13 strategic fields, we look forward to collaborating with KAC to contribute to the realization of an environmentally friendly and secure airport, ultimately benefiting national security."
