KTC Designated as Safety Testing Institution for Reusable Batteries

Korea Testing Certification institute (KTC) has officially been appointed as a safety testing institution for electrical appliances by Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, effective from the 21st. Commencing on this date, KTC will initiate safety testing for reusable batteries within the KC (Korea Certification) system.

The safety testing framework for reusable batteries facilitates the secure repurposing of post-consumer batteries from electric vehicles and other sources. It ensures their suitability for various applications such as energy storage systems (ESS) and camping power banks, determined by the residual lifespan through KC safety assessments. However, batteries for automotive propulsion are exempt from this scheme.

On the 13th, the government unveiled the "Secondary Battery Pre-Cycle Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Plan," acknowledging post-use batteries from electric vehicles as reusable products rather than mere waste. Furthermore, global electric vehicle retirements are anticipated to rise from 411 million units in 2030 to 422.7 million units by 2040, signaling a potential expansion of the reusable battery market and heightened investment by numerous companies.

With its official designation, KTC will conduct pre-tests, electrical inspections, and functional stability reviews for post-use batteries, ensuring compliance with KC 10031 standards.

KTC President Sungil Ahn remarked, "The reuse of post-use batteries is a fundamental strategy for battery circular economies," underscoring KTC's dedication to contributing to national safety by ensuring the objectivity and reliability of testing and inspection as a safety testing institution for reusable batteries.

KTC is a nationally and internationally accredited testing and certification institution that assesses battery safety through performance, electrical, mechanical, and fire hazard evaluations from primary use to reuse.

Companies interested in reusable battery safety testing can apply through the Intelligent Testing and Certification Platform (cs.ktc.re.kr). Further inquiries can be directed to the KTC Battery Center at 043-928-2045.
