□ The Korea Testing and Research Institute for Machinery, Electricity, and Electronics (hereafter KTC) announced on January 31st that it participated in the completion ceremony of the first commercial-grade hydrogen liquefaction plant in South Korea, located within the headquarters of Doosan Mobility Innovation in Changwon. At the ceremony, KTC signed agreements with 16 organizations to support research projects, facilitate the purchase of liquefied hydrogen, and promote the hydrogen industry.
□ The completion ceremony was attended by several government-affiliated research institutions, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as well as numerous representatives from companies involved in liquefied hydrogen. Various agreements were signed during the event. Additionally, High Changwon Co., Ltd., a liquefied hydrogen supplier, solidified stable operation of the hydrogen liquefaction plant and hydrogen supply through purchase agreements with institutions and companies interested in utilizing liquefied hydrogen.
□ The agreements encompassed tasks such as the establishment of liquefied hydrogen filling stations, conversion of commuting buses to hydrogen-powered ones (involving construction companies, commuting bus operators, and travel/transportation companies), liquefied hydrogen purchase agreements (between High Changwon and users such as research institutions and businesses), and agreements for the construction of liquefied hydrogen filling stations and purchase of liquefied hydrogen (involving Changwon City, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and High Changwon). Through these agreements, KTC aims to collaborate on supporting domestic and international hydrogen industries, fostering the hydrogen industry, and contributing to the activation of the hydrogen industry in Changwon.
□ The Changwon hydrogen liquefaction plant is the first in Korea to produce high-purity gaseous hydrogen by reforming natural gas, followed by liquefaction through the cold box, cooling it to -253oC. The plant is capable of producing and supplying 5 tons of liquefied hydrogen per day, with an annual maximum production capacity of 1,825 tons.
□ Korea's national greenhouse gas reduction target for 2030 (NDC) is a 40% reduction compared to the emissions in 2018. Clean hydrogen plays a crucial role in achieving this goal. The Clean Hydrogen Certification System certifies hydrogen as clean if the greenhouse gas emissions throughout the production and importation processes are below a certain level, providing incentives to support the use of clean hydrogen.
□ As the first domestic clean hydrogen certification testing and evaluation organization, KTC offers testing and evaluation services such as assessment and verification of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the hydrogen production process, inspection of key on-site data and equipment for hydrogen production, issuance of evaluation result reports for clean hydrogen certification, and ongoing checks on compliance with certification standards.
□ President An Sung-il of KTC stated, "Through this agreement, we will strive to establish a collaborative system for the hydrogen industry, a key growth project in our country, to contribute to the development of eco-friendly energy industries. We aim to enhance global competitiveness in the face of climate change and domestic energy industry challenges."
