KTC-KCL-Hanyang University Joins Hands in Carbon Neutral Building Certification

KTC-KCL-Hanyang University signs a memorandum of understanding for carbon-neutral building certification

Expectations for supporting carbon reduction in the building sector through collaboration in carbon-neutral building certification operations

KTC, KCL, and Hanyang University have joined forces in the operation of carbon-neutral building certification. The Korea Testing Certification (KTC), Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), and Hanyang University announced on the 28th that they have signed a memorandum of understanding at Hanyang University's ERICA Prime Conference Hall to designate and establish an organization for carbon-neutral building certification.

Carbon Neutral Building Certification (ZCB; Zero Carbon Building Certification) is a private-sector system that certifies the carbon reduction performance of buildings through quantitative evaluation of carbon emissions and reductions throughout the entire process of building construction.

During the signing ceremony, attendees included Choi Hyeon-jeong, Director of Carbon Neutrality and Environmental Projects at KTC, Lee Bong-chun, Director of the Smart Construction Materials Center at KCL Construction Division, and Taesung-ho, Director of the Carbon Neutral Smart Construction Center at Hanyang University.

According to the industry, buildings are closely related to various industries from the perspective of the carbon reduction value chain. The importance of evaluating and reducing carbon emissions throughout the entire process has been recognized, but a certification system for this purpose has been lacking.

Through this agreement, the three organizations have committed to establishing a system for mutual exchange and collaboration for joint projects, including ▲evaluation of carbon-neutral building certification ▲development and activation of the system ▲participation in certification operating committees and technical cooperation ▲personnel training and education.

KTC, selected as the "Clean Hydrogen Certification Testing and Evaluation Organization" by the Ministry of Industry last year, has been expanding its carbon emissions MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) business area in various industries from this year. In the future, it plans to evaluate carbon emissions and reductions throughout the entire life cycle of new, existing, and remodeled buildings, and support building designs that consider both environmental performance and livability.

An Sung-il, Director of KTC, stated, "KTC plans to gain recognition for the credibility of carbon-neutral building certification by accrediting institutional standards" and added, "We will contribute to achieving national greenhouse gas reduction goals in the building sector through support such as training specialized personnel and joint research in low-carbon technologies."
