Miner Park Jeong-ha, who dramatized "221 hours of miraculous rescue"... KTC holds special lecture by invitation

Over 700 employees respond after listening to miraculous survival story

The Korea Testing Certification (KTC, Director An Seong-il) announced that it invited miner Park Jeong-ha (64), who demonstrated the "miracle of 221 hours," to hold a 'famous speaker lecture' in celebration of April as the month of innovation and communication.
The lecture was held targeting all employees at the KTC headquarters in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, on the morning of the 1st. The lecture was also broadcasted live through online channels to all support and center employees.
The lecture was conducted to raise awareness of safety accidents among all employees in line with April being the month of innovation and communication. KTC has been hosting lectures by inviting famous speakers on various themes for all employees on the 1st of every month.
This month's invited speaker is miner Park Jeong-ha, who gained attention by appearing on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block" episode 171 "A Single Candle (broadcast on December 7, 2022)." Park, who was trapped in an accident at a zinc mine in Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang Province on October 26, 2022, miraculously survived after being isolated at a depth of over 190 meters for 221 hours, demonstrating the miracle of 'a single candle'.

Park, born in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, spent over 20 years as a miner until the Dongwon Tanjwa Sambuk Mine closed in November 2004, after settling in Sabuk, Gangwon-do in 1980. After retiring, he operated a pension with his family but returned to mining at the Bonghwa mine in Gyeongsangbuk-do at the end of 2017, where the accident occurred.
Park miraculously survived after being isolated for just over 10 days, rescued after 221 hours. He shared moments of clinging to life, such as drinking coffee mix and water dripping from the rock crevices. Especially, he expressed despair when his headlamp went out just before the rescue, but he said, "I believed in my colleagues' rescue," delivering a story of survival that touched many.
KTC specially planned this month's lecture to boost employees' awareness of safety accidents at worksites. Along with sharing the secret to overcoming pitch-black darkness and surviving, there was also a bold session for employees to ask questions to the speaker.
Director An Seong-il of KTC stated, "Considering the difficulty of thinking about employees' concerns about safety accidents at worksites due to the nature of our work, we planned and prepared this month's invited lecture with special care," and added, "As the leading testing and certification institution in Korea, we will spare no effort to improve the working environment and promote a culture of communication among our employees."
